Nestled inside the quiet spaciousness of Georgia’s Deep Southwest and peaking at a population of just over 700 citizens, Plains is an unassuming town, filled with unassuming people committed to their families and their farms. Plains is also the birthplace of the 39th President of the United States, James Earl Carter, Jr. As for the locals? They just call him “Mister Jimmy.”
In the 40 years since Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter left the White House for their Georgia homestead, millions of people of every race, culture, and creed have made the pilgrimage to the rural whistlestop of Plains for an extraordinary glimpse into the folksy life of America’s longest-living presidential couple and their dedication to equality and peace. And yet Plains is haunted by a segregated past. A train track still divides the town into two–Black and White. Is Plains as it seems? Is separate always segregated? Is different always divided?
