Septima: From A to Z

As South Carolina's PURE Theatre brings the story of civil rights worker Septima P. Clark to unconventional performance spaces throughout the region, we travel with the cast and crew, celebrating the achievements and learning the best practices of this little-known Charlestonian.

Septima Clark’s life and her work in citizen education are revealed through rehearsals and performances of PURE Theatre’s SEPTIMA, The performances take place, primarily, throughout the Lowcountry of South Carolina. As the story unfolds, we check in with cast and crew members who share their growing appreciation for the work of Septima Clark as the 2024 U.S. presidential election looms in the background, and then after the election, when anticipated - and then actual - roll-backs of the advances in civil rights that Clark had worked so diligently to advance. Testimonials and memories of other South Carolinians who were acquainted with Clark personally or who were influenced by her in her role as the “mother” of the Civil Rights Movement are folded into the story, bringing additional depth and warmth to the story. History professors provide additional context to key moments in Clark’s life. Throughout the course of the film, the profound love for humankind that fueled Clark’s dedicated action becomes apparent, and her playbook for effective community engagement is detailed in such a way that audience members who are inspired to follow Clark’s lead can walk away from the film with a list of actionable tactics..
