Our Wicked City

A filmmaker's hometown once known as the “Wickedest City in America,” now confronts its hushed, dark past as a new generation grapples with a troubled legacy and seeks an authentic reckoning.

Our Wicked City is a character-driven film about a small Alabama town at a cultural and economic crossroads. The film balances the town’s ambitious aim to rebrand itself as “Positively Phenix City,” with the sordid reputation still lingering from its past as the once “Wickedest City in America.” The town’s history and its reputation is built upon unsettling truths, as well as unverifiable myths perpetuated by oral storytelling as well as Hollywood’s popular but problematic rendition of the town’s story known as THE PHENIX CITY STORY (1955). The story will be told through the perspectives of local descendants of key historical figures, young creative theater students, and scholars and historians.
