Gee’s Bend, Alabama, also known as Boykin, is a Black majority community in the rural American South, most known for its intergenerational legacy of quiltmaking. “Gee’s Bend: Welcome To The Hole” gives an insider's perspective on the nuances that shaped this region and the lives of those living in it.

When you think of Black Southern American life, fiber arts may not be among your first thoughts, but to those born into this culture, it’s just another ordinary aspect of life, like fishing or running barefoot through the grass. “Gee’s Bend: Welcome To The Hole” is a visual diary and an ancestral worship of Black culture in the confines of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Often left to oral tradition, the remnants of knowledge passed down by Black elders of the American South are disappearing. This documentary archives that knowledge and gives a more cohesive look at the impacts that defined this unadulterated hidden gem of the American South. The film documents members of the Gee’s Bend community during three major events: 2023’s Airing of the Quilts Festival, 2024's homecoming celebration May Day, and the Airing of the Quilts Festival during that same year. Neo-expressionism artist and great-grandson of world-renowned quilter Martha Jane Pettway, Xsavior Pettway, also known as X The Artist, serves as a guide and entry pass into the world of Gee’s Bend through this presentation of culture, heritage, and community.
