Living on the Edge: The Outer Banks Odyssey

For millennia, North Carolina’s Outer Banks existed as an isolated island chain where indigenous tribes, and later shipwreck survivors, carved out a subsistence living. A dramatic change began when wealthy visitors transformed the area into the popular tourist destination it is today, as rising sea level threatens the islands’ future.

This project is an hour-long documentary, directed by Oscar-winner David Kasper, and intended for broadcast on PBS NC statewide and on additional PBS stations across the country. To make as broad an impact as possible, the film will also be distributed to educational institutions and civic groups, and al research materials and interviews will be archived at the Outer Banks History Center in Manteo, NC. The film’s focus is the environmental and cultural history of North Carolina's Outer Banks. The intent is to: a) educate the public about the rich history of this isolated barrier island chain, b) collect and archive living memories before they are lost, c) raise awareness of the coming environmental challenges, d) inspire the same determination and resilience of the human spirit to meet these challenges that allowed earlier islanders to build a life in balance with the natural world around them.
