One Kind Favor
Mary Frances Hurt instantly knew that the burning of the Mississippi John Hurt Museum was no accident. In a county and state plagued by 300 years of racial violence, she chooses to rebuild from the ashes and fight for a better future in the Delta.
Mary Frances was born into a family of sharecroppers in the large and close-knit African-American community of Avalon, MS. Today, her community has all gone north and the Hurts hold the last Black-owned land in Avalon. Mary Frances alone has defended her family’s legacy – a centuries-old graveyard and the house where her grandfather lived – in the hopes of creating an education center for Mississippi’s youth. When Avalon’s graveyard is bulldozed and the museum burns, Mary Frances is devastated. Her dreams are lost forever. In the wake of these terrible losses she is forced to pick up the pieces and salvage a legacy from the charred remains. When state and federal investigations into the fire close due to lack of evidence, she gathers from across the country for a blues festival in her grandfather’s honor.
