Sister Senators

In Ruby Red South Carolina, the only five women in an overwhelmingly male and conservative State Senate defy party lines and fight for women’s rights. Their bipartisan unity becomes a rallying point for women across the Southeast–and a political weapon that is turned against them by their enemies.

As other states pass strict abortion bans post-Dobbs, the Sister Senators hold the line, successfully blocking a total abortion ban in South Carolina. But behind-the-scenes maneuvering by their male colleagues eventually leads to the passage of a 6-week ban, cutting off abortion access for women across the region. When the 2024 election cycle looms, The Sister Senators face a new battle: conservative forces determined to push them out to make the state Senate an all-male body once again.

They fight back, but the ole boys club proves more ruthless—and effective—than anyone expected. At the dawn of 2025, just one Sister Senator returns to her seat and South Carolina falls to 49th in the US rankings of gender parity in state legislatures. But, the Sister Senators refuse to stop. They strategize for the future, vowing to push back against sexist legislation and to get more women elected no matter what.
