Revealing a giant of satire whose influence on western culture shaped generations of artists.

Ronald Searle has been called “one of the world’s greatest satirical artists.” From his first published work in1935 in the Cambridge Daily News to his death in 2011, he remained remarkably prolific, drawing in various styles running from classical to avante-garde. As he once said, “I never stop looking for a line that will go off in a thousand different directions.” Searle’s legacy is vast, and his work—hundreds of books, cartoons and illustrations in the major publications of his day-- inspired generations of illustrators from The Simpsons’ creator Matt Groenig to the legendary Sir Quentin Blake. This film will be a thrilling creative journey depicting an underappreciated genius with a large historical footprint. This documentary aims to appeal to a large and diverse audience while highlighting themes within Searle’s work that are hauntingly relevant today.
