Refuge in the Bay

Refuge in the Bay is a meditative yet pressing documentary about Chesapeake Bay communities fighting to hold onto their homes, cultures, and way of life as the land around them sinks. It is a ruminative look into a disappearing way of life that embodies perseverance, heritage, and determination as the water rises.

On the disappearing edges of the Chesapeake Bay, entire communities are watching the ground beneath them sink while fighting to preserve the places they call home. Homes are disappearing, shorelines retreating, and centuries-old cultures dwindling in places such as Deal Island, Smith Island, Tangier Island, and Crisfield, where tall grass marshes, glassy waters, crab shacks, and colonial homes shape a way of life now marked by rising tides. Signs warn of “tipping points” as nuisance flooding forces kids to wade home from the bus stop, interrupts church services, and prevents emergency responders from reaching those in need, yet residents remain steadfast in their commitment to stay. As climate change intensifies the threats, a diverse group of engineers, economists, politicians, artists, and locals work together to provide protection, all while facing mounting pressures and limited support from national and state governments. Their rigid determination and collaborative spirit illuminate a disappearing world where heritage, community, and resilience hold strong even as the water continues to rise.
