Seabreeze: A Legacy
Seabreeze: A Legacy
The story of Seabreeze, NC. A black owned and operated beach community that thrived during the early 1900s, on the coast of North Carolina. An encapsulation of Seabreeze’s foundation, people, and essence.
Seabreeze, NC, was a prominent community for black and brown people just outside of Wilmington, NC, a beach town. Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach were segregated until the mid-1960s, making the small stretch of land before you crossed the Carolina Beach bridge the only place in Wilmington for black and brown people to visit the water. After integration, black people in Wilmington still went to Seabreeze, and it remained a black owned and operated community until the early dawn of the 21st century. Due to gentrification, Seabreeze slipped out of the hands of the original owners. This is one of the many stories of Black land ownership and loss in the South.
