Sisterhoodship
“Sisterhoodship” (working title; was previously LeAnne Rucker Has Cancer) chronicles the extraordinary journey of two sisters, photographer Christine Rucker, and her younger sister, LeAnne Rucker, as they navigate the challenging landscape of a terminal cancer diagnosis in the face of LeAnne’s developmental disabilities and reclaim their bond as sisters.
“Sisterhoodship” is a participatory feature length documentary that examines the relationship of two sisters- who were emotionally and physically separated by intellectual disabilities, mental illness, and LeAnne’s many institutionalizations .They rediscover a bond through the unlikely vehicle of a terminal cancer diagnosis. A transformational journey unfolds for both sisters as LeAnne finds her own autonomy for the first time and both sisters find common ground in the natural world. LeAnne guides the audience through a roller coaster of emotions through her insight, humor, grief, joy and healing and keeps the audience engaged by her optimism and faith. Christine finds her own transformation as she finally sees life through her sister’s perspective. This powerful and intimate story captures the viewer in a way only lived experience and personal storytelling can do.
