Loving Opera Project

In this eight part series of short films set in a tradition-bound art form slow to welcome representation and belonging, a team of groundbreaking artists brings the Richard and Mildred Lovings’ civil rights story to the opera stage as a present-day stand for dignity, equality, and the transformative power of art. Grounded in the Lovings’ enduring fight, the story and music become instruments of our better nature—demanding we remember our shared history, humanity, and the radical power of love.

In a time marked by cultural flashpoints—like renaming the Kennedy Center after Donald Trump—a new vérité documentary series about an opera on the Lovings, directed by the producer and editor of the Emmy- and Peabody-winning The Loving Story, explores the urgent fight to control how history is told. No other project is as uniquely positioned as this one to tell the story of the cultural backlash unfolding in America today.
