Rising from humble small town roots,, Fay Jones forged a uniquely Southern chapter in the history of American Modernism, with an architectural vision that combined extraordinary technical rigor with a deeply poetic spirituality.

“My Most Important Thoughts: Fay Jones and Organic Architecture” is a feature length documentary exploring the life and career of one of America’s most important midcentury architects. Although Jones is less well known than colleagues working from major metropolitan centers, this film makes the case that Jones’ exquisite articulation of what might be called ‘Ozark Modernism’ deserves to be considered among the greatest achievements of 20th century American design.

Jones began as a disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright, but working from a small studio in Fayetteville, Arkansas, he developed his own approach to architecture rooted in nature. His work embraced organic principles not as style, but as a disciplined method—allowing buildings to emerge naturally from their sites, materials, and the lives of those who commissioned them. Jones chose to work on smaller-scale projects–residences and chapels, rather than skyscrapers and airports. And that almost certainly contributed to his relative obscurity. However, the intimacy of his work has emerged as a defining feature and one reason his reputation has only continued to grow in the years since his death.

This film explores ten of Jones’s most important projects, the context in which they were created, and the clients who made them possible. These collaborations reveal a practice defined as much by relationships and integrity as by design innovation.

Ultimately, this film is the story of an architect and educator who reconciled modernism with nature, rigor with poetry, and regional identity with spiritual meaning — creating an enduring body of work where structure, light, and landscape speak as one.
