Building upon the award-winning film Mission Recompense: Love Letters to a Mississippi Delta, a Delta-born filmmaker expands her cinematic love letter into a documentary series preserving the Black communities, memories, culture, and living history of the Mississippi Delta.

Mission Recompense: Love Letters to a Mississippi Delta is an episodic documentary series preserving the people, places, and living histories Delta. Historian Sylvester Hoover serves as the project’s central guide, connecting personal testimony to the region’s broader history. Rickey Bradford and his brother examine the history, misconceptions, and continuing challenges surrounding Black agriculture, while Baptist Town resident Dash Brown reflects on his relationship with his community. Army combat veteran T. C. Govan shares a quiet fishing experience in Como, revealing another intimate dimension of Delta life.

The series also visits sites central to American history. In Greenwood, the film explores Broad Street Park, where Stokely Carmichael popularized the call for “Black Power” during the 1966 March Against Fear. In Money, it visits Bryant’s Grocery, the location connected to the accusation that preceded the abduction and murder of Emmett Till. In Glendora, Mayor Jonnie B. Thomas leads viewers through his Emmett Till museum and a re-created juke joint while discussing environmental injustice and his plans to confront it.

Building on footage filmed in Charleston, Como, Money, Glendora, and Greenwood, the expanded series will continue documenting Greenwood, gather family histories in Money, and extend its work into Mound Bayou, Greenville, Cleveland, and Clarksdale. It will also examine public education in rural Delta communities. Across five to seven episodes of approximately 30 to 45 minutes each, Mission Recompense will create a community-rooted record of Black history, land, culture, memory, and survival.
